Understanding Chat in Microsoft Teams

Click on the New chat icon at the top of the app to start a new conversation. In the New Chat area, type the name of the person or people you want to chat with. You can add as many people as you want to the To field. Then, compose your message and click Send

Adding many people to a private chat 

To add multiple people to an ongoing private conversation, click on the Add people icon at the top right corner of your private conversation. 

Favorite or unfavorite a chat

Add to Favourite: Select the member whose conversation you want to mark as favourite from your Recent chats and click More optionsFavorite. This helps to make your chat experience easier by ensuring that the favourite chat stays at the top of your list. 

Remove from Favourite: To remove a chat from your favourites, just click More optionsRemove from favorites.

Mute or Unmute a chat 


Mute a chat: When you need the notifications from a particular chat to show up, select the chat and click More optionsMute . But by doing this, you will remain to get the chats from that person, the only thing is that you will not be notified each time. 

Unmute a chat: If you want to unmute it click More optionsUnmute .

Edit or delete a sent message 

Edit a sent message:You can edit any message that you have sent to a chat or channel. Find the message and click More optionsEdit. Make the necessary modifications to your message and press Enter to save the update. There is no hard and fast rule as to how many times a chat can be edited. 

Delete a sent message: If you need to backtrack and delete an individual message you just sent, go to the message and click More optionsDelete.

Share file, images, links 

Adding File/Image: To attach a file or picture in your chat, click Choose filebeneath your compose box and upload a file or picture from your computer or OneDrive, or search from the Files tab for that channel. In a chat, click Choose file and pick the file or picture you want from your computer or OneDrive. 

Adding Links: You can either paste the link as such or you can click on Expand beneath the compose box, then click Insert link. Add display text and the address, and then click Insert. 

 Format Message 

Bored of plain text chats/messages. Click Expand beneath your compose box to expand it and open to view all formatting options: 

 Bold, italicize,underline, and highlight text. 
 Change your font colour and size (small, medium, or large). 
Create bulleted or numbered lists. 
Add a link. 
Add quote and code snippet.  Mark a chat as important by tapping Important! icon. 

Mark a chat as unread 

To mark a message as unread in a chat or a channel, go to the top of the message and click More Options> Mark as unread.

Translate and Spell Check 

Translate: When someone sends you a message in a foreign language, you need not have to panic. Instead just go to the top of the message and select More optionsTranslate to get an instant translation of the message into the language you’ve set for Teams. 

Note:If you don’t see this option, talk to your IT admin. They might need to turn it on.

Emoji, GIF and Stickers 

To make your chats more Fun, make use of the below features. 

Emoji: To send an emoji in a message, click Emojibeneath your compose box. From the emoji gallery, select the emoji you want and click Send. 

GIF: To send an animated GIF in a message or a channel conversation, just click GIF beneath your compose box. Use the search bar at the top of the window to look for something specific (like “sleeping dog”) or browse the collection of popular GIFs. 

Sticker: To send a meme or sticker in a chat or channel, click Sticker beneath your compose box. From the broad range of GIFs select one, add captions, click Done, and then Send. 

 Save a message 

To save a message, click Saveto the right of the text.
