We at Hubfly conduct ‘Lunch & Learn’ sessions every Friday. And this Friday, Jayakumar took a walkthrough of SharePoint Framework and how it could help speed up Intranet sites. Microsoft has recently announced public CDN capability to Office 365 where we can host SharePoint Framework client-side web parts.
What is a SharePoint Framework?
SharePoint Framework is a new prototype for doing SharePoint customizations. With SharePoint Framework in place, we are allowed to host customizations outside of SharePoint either on public CDN’s or other locations where data can be served fast. That would mean loading your SharePoint sites much faster.
Here is what Microsoft has to say about the new Framework.
“The SharePoint Framework (SPFx) is a page and web part model that provides full support for client-side SharePoint development, easy integration with SharePoint data, and support for open source tooling. With the SharePoint Framework, you can use modern web technologies and tools in your preferred development environment to build productive experiences and apps that are responsive and mobile-ready from day one. The SharePoint Framework works for SharePoint Online and soon also for on-premises (SharePoint 2016 Feature Pack 2).”

Live Demonstration of SharePoint Framework App vs Provided-Hosted App
The highlight of today’s session is when Jayakumar showed us a live demonstration of Hubfly Intranet (QA Instance) that is built on SharePoint Framework & another instance that is self-hosted in Azure CDN. The one developed with SharePoint Framework literally loaded in 2 seconds and became the dead certain winner. The other site took more than 8 seconds to show up.
Moral of the session: SharePoint Framework is something to be embraced!
